Media Statement: Energy Marlborough Launches New Solar Farm in Seddon

Blenheim, Marlborough – 21 November 2024

Energy Marlborough, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Marlborough Lines, is thrilled to announce its new Seaview Solar Farm near Seddon, started producing its first energy in October 2024.

Located adjacent to the Yealands Winery and comprising 6,168 solar panels, the 4.07MW facility is the largest solar farm in the upper South Island.

Seaview Solar Farm is expected to generate about 6.5GWh every year – enough to power 800 typical residential homes in Marlborough. This output contributes more than 1.5 percent of the region's annual energy needs (approximately 420GWh), feeding directly into the local electricity network where all energy produced will be used by the Marlborough community.

Marlborough Lines CEO Tim Cosgrove says the new solar farm represents a significant investment in renewable energy for Marlborough and a major step forward in meeting the region’s growing local energy needs more sustainably.

“With Marlborough’s abundant sunshine hours and Marlborough Lines’ strong commitment to sustainability, solar farms represent a strategic step toward reducing carbon emissions and supporting the region’s projected growth in energy requirements,” Cosgrove says.

The Seaview Solar Farm is part of a broader vision of energising Marlborough's future as a regional leader in renewable energy. Work on an even larger solar farm in Ward, with a capacity of 9MW, began in November 2024. Once completed, this network of solar projects will play a crucial role in building a more resilient and environmentally friendly energy system in Marlborough.
